Passive Houses are;
- Highly energy efficient - using up to 90% less energy for heating than "conventional" construction
- Comfortable - constant, comfortable indoor temperatures are maintained throughout the day, all year round, with minimal requirement for heating
- Healthy - Passive Houses have a filtered fresh air supply to provide good ventilation and air quality, to avoid draughts, condensation and mould, and to ensure optimum indoor humidity and carbon dioxide levels
- Sustainable - the ultra low ongoing energy use means minimal carbon dioxide emissions - Passive House buildings are therefore the most responsible way to build to address climate change
- Future proof - high levels of insulation and high quality components will continue to perform as designed, ensuring very low energy bills and resilience to future climate change events
- Unique - the Passive House standard does not dictate what the building looks like or what materials are used - just how it performs
Passive House design can also be used for retrofitting existing buildings - this is called the EnerPHit standard. Upgrading a house to the EnerPHit level can be done in phases if necessary.
